Inspirations from Samadhi Yoga
Quote of the month:
"I think the connection with nature for me has to do with recalibrating myself to a primordial rhythm. Most of us are out of sync with that rhythm; we're going too fast for too long. So to be in sync with that rhythm can mean very basic things, such as I get up at dawn because the sun's getting up. I go to sleep because I'm tired." - Donna Farhi

Ayurvedic Recipe For the Season:
Berry Heaven Tart
2 cups of fresh blackberries 1 cup fresh raspberries (substitute for blueberries or strawberries if raspberries unavailable) 1/2 cup unrefined brown sugar 2 tablespoons arrowroot starch 1/8 cup of cold water 1 pinch of rock salt
Sweet tart dough 1 cup unbleached whole wheat flour 1 tablespoon unrefined brown sugar 1 pinch rock salt 2 tablespoons of sunflower oil 1/4 cup of warm water
Method: Prepare a sweet tart dough and place it in an oiled rectangular baking dish (see below for Sweet Tart method) Preheat oven to 188 degrees celsius. Wash berries and mash half of them into pulp. Set aside the whole berries. Pour the mashed berries into a medium sized saucepan and bring to a boi on medium heat. Dilute the starch in cold water and pour into fruit mixture, along with the salt. Reduce heat, stir frequently until mixture thickens, then remove from heat and set aside. Arrange the whole berries in the unbaked tart shell and pour the fruit mixture over them. Bake for 30min, until the edges of the shell turn golden brown. Serve warm.
Dough Method: To make the shell tart, combine flour, sugar, salt and gradually adding the oil. Use sufficient water to knead the dough into a firm ball. Roll out the dough into a circle, large enough to cover and 8-inch tart pan. Chill until the shell is stiff. If the filling and crust are to be baked together, dough is now ready to be used. For a prebaked pastry shell, continue with the following directions. Preheat oven to 190 degrees celsius and bake the shell for 15min, until the edges are lightly brown. Cool on a rack.
Inspiring people who we love...If you come to Samadhi regularly then you will have at some stage met the larger than life Sarah T! She is currently raising $20,000 for a project that Sean Corn is heading called 'Off The Mat and Into The World'. All the money Sarah raises will go to the Cambodian Children's Fund (CCF). The CCF runs orphanages and education programs for some of the poorest people in the world. Keep an eye out for workshops and events Sarah will be running at Samadhi.
We also just met the most inspiring yogini from Washington DC in the USA, she is one of the founders of www.anahatainternational.org. Their aim is to empower people and create social change and healing through yoga.

'The Kamikaze Mind' by Richard James Allen (Samadhi teacher)
The Kamikaze Mind is the story of an astronaut who launched himself into a black hole. The recovered fragments of his mind have been organised alphabetically into a whitty, whimsical, surprisingly touching and laugh-out-loud funny dictionary of a floating mind.A journey from chaos to calm, regret to acceptance, anger to compassion, The Kamikaze Mind is a handbook for keeping a smile on your face and a smile in your heart when you’re on that slippery slope, that big wave, or just the same bus again. Written by poet, dancer, filmmaker and much loved Yoga teacher Richard James Allen, The Kamikaze Mind documents the protests, longings, contradictions and quirky humor of a mind leaning towards enlightenment but still ensnared in the glorious and sometimes gritty illusions and delusions of the everyday world.
'Spiritual Survival and the City' by Katie Spiers (Samadhi director)
From Samadhi's founder comes this exploration of the philosophical and spiritual teachings of yoga as they apply in everyday life. The book follows closely the teachings of Patanjali as he describes the eight-limbed path to attaining yoga - or deep happiness - for everyone. Filled with practical tips and quotes from spiritual masters, it will uplift and inspire you as well as de-mystifying the spiritual teachings of yoga. Especially great for students who have been practicing yoga for a while and wish to understand more of the philosophy of this ancient tradition.
